No fewer than 13 passengers killed and 98 injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key public works projects.

The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” affirmed the country's president.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's economic agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in civilian projects. They were completed at an rapid speed, beating forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised ongoing concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party called for an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This stoppage was suggested pending a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."

In response, the president insisted that the train had been operating in full compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these national undertakings.
